Choosing Envicool is to choose a life full of challenges. Mr. Dai Xiangyang, who is addressed as "Dai Gong” (Gong is short for engineer in Chinese) by his colleagues, became a member of Envicool in 2010. Before that, he worked for a large state-owned enterprise and a well-known foreign company successively. Looking back, he bluntly told us that the work at Envicool was the hardest but the most fulfilling experience for him.
In early 2017, he was transferred to a newly-established department. Many friends didn't understand why he chose a path full of uncertainties when he could have gone further smoothly in the IDC Department. He smiled and said, "I still have the energy and curiosity to learn and fight. Why not?" After all, uncertainty brings out great passion.
Always ready!
Envicool's team was what attracted him the most, it still does today. He shared his view on the most valuable asset of Envicool to us, “The team values the spirit of craftsmanship. Everyone will try their best to fulfill their duty with diligence and professionalism." The application scenarios have very high reliability requirements for our air-conditioning products.
That's why the R&D personnel have to maintain cautious and stay alert all the time. Therefore, Mr. Dai developed the habit of carrying a laptop with him, always ready for work. One day in the evening, when participating in an outdoor activity of his department with his family, he was informed that he needed to attend a meeting in the northeastern part of China next morning to provide technical support.
“The clock was ticking. I didn't have time to go home. So, they sent me directly to the airport. Fortunately, my computer was with me. Then I trusted my family with my colleagues.” The incident happened in 2014. When commissioning a batch of our in-row air conditioners in a data center, its O&M personnel on-site put forward a number of technical requirements all of a sudden and persisted in accepting after they were met.
Our team responsible for the project went through the contract and found no such requirements. And given the circumstances, their requirements seemed unreasonable. That's why Mr. Dai was sent to the site on such short notice.
After he communicated with the customer, he found that energy efficiency was a key focus of the customer. However, despite multiple attempts, none of the customer's ideas had successfully actualized due to the limited technical strength of previous air-conditioning suppliers.
As he stepped out of the customer's office, he immediately reported the information to headquarters. More technical personnel arrived soon to hear the details and discuss a feasible plan.
They completed the demo in no time and careful verification proved that the demo met the customer's needs. As a result, with strong technical capability and professional products, our team created value for the customer and won their trust. In the following years, the same customer turned to us for many times.
What it takes to make an excellent supervisor
Mr. Dai has been selected as an excellent supervisor for new employees many times. When talking about the secret of being an excellent supervisor, he shared with us three qualities needed: Firstly, actions are louder than words. The supervisor should lead by example to help the newcomers hone their skills and appreciate company culture; Secondly, share without reservation. Teach them everything you know.
He said, "I am lucky that my supervisors are all very generous. I’m so grateful for their help. That's why I want to be a supervisor like them to share everything I know with the newcomers." Thirdly, offer individualized instruction. The supervisor should formulate personalized training plans according to the characteristics of new employees. Mr. Dai shared a story of a fresh graduate under his supervision. The newcomer had been complained about once because of his low efficiency in writing documents. He became unsure of himself.
Mr. Dai noticed and found the problem was about his extreme low typing speed. The boy didn’t know how to type properly. The next thing Mr. Dai did was to test his own speed with a typing software—Kingsoft TypeEasy. Based on that, he made a plan for the boy: practice 1 hour a day and reach a touch-typing speed of 120 words/min within one week.
The boy worked really hard and just took four days to accomplish the mission. After improving his typing, the newcomer regained his confidence and performed better in his work.
